Laos is a niche market and has its own distinct language and system of writing. Therefore is a demand for specific programming characteristics. Nowadays, more and more Lao people are paying serious attentions to available TV programming and other media. Instead of watching Lao TV most Lao people watch mostly Thai TV channels as well as some watch Vietnam, Chinese programming.
This has been primarily due to the fact that there is a lack of content and what content there is has traditionally been low quality. The Lao PDR. needs quality content from a leading TV provider not just for business and communication purposes, but also to provide a new medium to bring forth a sense of nationalism along with conserving Lao culture.
To develop such a strong Lao TV presence would mean that there is a new vehicle to significantly assist in the development of Lao. Therefore the transfer of Lao history and tradition would be guaranteed by providing and delivering useful information, news, entertainment via knowledge based content and popular culture.
Lao Star Channel is broadcasted by using two broadcasting platforms which are as follows: (1) Channel Distribution Platform (C-Band) and (2) Direct-to-Home Broadcast Platform (Ku-Band). THAICOM5 has been selected to uplink and air programs due to its capacity to the provide highest penetration in Asia. Moreover, there are 4 satellites being used in parallel to THAICOM5.
This was Implemented as a strategic partnership in broadcasting television signals around the world. Currently there are 26 countries in which Lao Star Channel can be viewed. This gives opportunity to Lao people Living in Laos as well as those who live abroad to view their ‘home’ news, updated information, entertainment, history and culture programs.
Presently, there is a total of 49 programs broadcasted on Lao Star Channel. 29 of these programs are owned and produced by Lao Star. 20% of our programs are devoted to Lao Tradition and Culture (e.g This is Muang Lao, Sinlapajumpa-Laos tradition arts, Vitee Lao etc.) 16% contain content of traditional music, 12% is modern (string) music, another 12% is news and variety..
The remaining shows focus on food, housing, kids, sports, teenage talk, women and traveling programs. Our production policy adheres strictly to the Lao government culture code of conduct. It also complies Strictly with Laos traditional culture in every detail (TV e.g. speaking, dressing, posturing etc.) regarding the content that is published on Lao Star TV.
Moving forward we intend to develop programs to become more interesting to various groups among various Lao demographics in order to draw more and more viewership to watch Lao TV. By doing so Lao people will be more proud of Lao culture, tradition and the country as a whole. For example Lao Star creates documentaries related to various hill tribes as well as the history and traditions of the people of all regions of the country (north, central, south, east and west).
